Sam Cason finishes 136th in the country!

Posted by Town of Elkin c/o Economic Development Dept on Monday, July 8, 2013, In : Elkin residents make news

Sam Cason took a trip to Ohio for a fencing tournament this weekend and did pretty darn good considering this is the top 6% in the country that qualified to compete! He finished 136th. Sam's Mom, Barbara, attached a picture from the state games in Mooresville a couple of weekends ago. He finished 25th in the state which is a little different because in the state games there was no age limit. He had to fence grown men who were bigger and stronger than he was. As far as his age group, he would ...

Posted by Town of Elkin c/o Economic Development Dept on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, In : Elkin residents make news

Elkin area residents, Madeline and her father Jay Morphis, have a special project they just completed. Together, they have created Teddy's Adventures, a new children's book that they wrote and illustrated together. Living in the country provides lots of fun things to do on sunny days, but on rainy days, Madeline found she liked to draw.

At age 7, her favorite stuffed animal was a pink bear named Teddy. Teddy followed Madeline everywhere, and soon she and her dad noticed Teddy was always on th...

Clyde tending to the newly planted vines...

Clyde and Pat Colwell are constantly busy. If you don't see them around town that much, it's because their days are filled with expanding the vineyard they began planting 8 years ago (which started with 9 1/2 acres.) They are adding an additional 3 acres with 5 new varieties of grapes which make good wine and are more mildew, disease and pest tolerant. The time-tested selections they are experimenting with were either bred for this purpose by the G...

Many of you might not know that Mark Greene, owner of Elkin Creek, has sold his winery this year to two wonderful couples. They have just moved here from the Las Vegas area to take over the winery with the same traditions and vision that Mark has had over the years.

Elkin businessman, Steve Royal, runs for NC Treasurer

Posted by Laura Gaylord on Saturday, April 28, 2012, In : Elkin residents make news

Steve Royal is a local Elkin businessman and accountant who has decided to run for North Carolina Treasurer. He is a registered Republican, but that is not what's important. Many times people are too concerned with a label or get taken in by a flashy campaign, and they fail to look at the person, their qualifications, and what they are really passionate about. Many politicians are just that, nothing more than a figurehead without the experience needed. However, Royal is very concerned about t...

"A Fit Girl is a Powerful Girl", story submitted by Stacey Libbert, photos by Laura Gaylord

Posted by Laura Gaylord on Monday, April 23, 2012, In : Elkin residents make news

Two years ago, my friend, Crystal Morphis, and I were on a long training run and talking about how much our lives had changed for the better once we started running.  Both of us agree that running has taught us things about ourselves we might not have known, and it made us better people in all sorts of ways. That's when the idea for G-Force, a running program for girls in grades 3-6 at Elkin Elementary School, was born.

As mothers we recognize the push to make our daughters grow up too soon. ...
