Appalachian Mural Trail includes Elkin downtown murals

Elkin will now be on the mural trail that include numerous other towns along the Appalachian mountains. Being closest to the Hwy 21 exit off of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Elkin is only a 25 minute drive towards lodging, great restaurants, town trails and shopping. Our historic downtown offers 6 murals and 2 ghost murals, but 4 are featured on the mural trail website.

Many of you may know that below 222 Public House (in downtown Elkin) there is a brand new microbrewery that just opened!  Well, save the date for April 7th, as that is slated for a big Grand Opening Celebration when Angry Troll Brewing and 222 Public House merge!

Reeves Theater Renovation Underway!

The Main Street Advisory Board's mural on Twenty One & Main is now complete!! First mural in Elkin, by NC muralist Michael Brown is a hit!

The first mural (seen here in progress) is of two historical landmarks that are no longer here in Elkin. One is of the Elkin train depot that used to be located on S Bridge Street next to the RR tracks (behind Twenty One & Main) and the other is of Hugh G Chatham Memorial Bridge that was torn down by the DOT in 2010.  Both are dearly missed, but the images of them bring back the fond memories we have of them. New mural began on August 13th..so exciting! This mural will depict old images of businesses no longer open that were unique to Elkin, along with a license plate issued in the 70's and 80's that used to adorn cars throughout town! The bottle cap represents the MacNeill Bottling Co. Chris Mahon is sponsoring this mural with the MSAB mural grants offered this year.

Surry County Farmer's Market Gearing Up Surry County is fortunate to have two farmer's markets. Both of these markets are committed to selling local produce and crafts. New businesses opening up in downtown Elkin!

Funk n Junk opened February 1st and is open on Fridays and Saturdays. It is located between the Chamber of Commerce and Chill on Main, right on Court St (hill). 

Another new antique shop is open on W Main Street. They are still getting items in and are about 1/2  way filled with furniture and other nik-naks. Vendors are still setting up, but they hope to be settled in by the end of the month.

Starting on Monday, April 23, Downtown Merchants will offer a fun alternative for shoppers along Main Street. The Grape Walk will be an ongoing challenge offered as a fun way to explore Elkin's downtown. The Yadkin Valley Craft Guild on has moved a few doors over to their new location, 126 W Main St, next to Royall's. Harry's Place Hosts Special Reunion of The Long & Pardue Band during Memorial for Harry and Nancy Smith

Elkin Main Street Advisory Board Wins Award

 "Come and Discover Downtown Elkin" won the 2011 North Carolina Main Street Award for Best Downtown Branding and Image-Building Campaign and they are the recipient of the Award of Merit, which will be presented to them in January 2012 by the North Carolina Department of Commerce, which stated the award was "for your efforts in furthering the cause of downtown revitalization in your community".

Currently Lumini Bodyworks and Microspa, this 1870's building
was originally the office of Elkin Manufacturing Company on the
east bank of Elkin Creek. After the 1916 flood, the building was
moved to its current location and became the office of the Elkin
and Alleghany Railway, chartered in 1907 and opened in 1911.
The line was to connect Northwestern North Carolina Railroad
