Maggy's Place in downtown Elkin offers overnight stay access

This little gem on Main Street in Elkin was once the old E&A ticket office for the train that is no longer in existence. Today, you can stay overnight in downtown Elkin and experience a blast from the past in this cute and cozy VRBO rental.  The restoration look over a year and it is beautiful, inside and out. Second Mural completed in Elkin, by muralist Michael Brown!

Mural 2 (of 4 proposed locations) was completed last week. This mural depicts businesses in Elkin that were a part of history and an important part of our past. Some of the images were added that had meaning to Chris Mahon, owner of the building, who participated in the Main Street Advisory Board mural grant program this year. For example, the "Best Little Town in NC" license plates were on everyone's car in Elkin, back in the year 1980 when Chris moved to Elkin. It held a fond memory for him...

Elkin Valley Trails Association hard at work!

Elkin Valley Trails Association is hard at work making Elkin a hub of activity and excitement! There are big plans for 2012 with meetings, trail workdays and eventually trails you can enjoy along the Overmountain Victory Trail and the Yadkin River.... and they are also planning for a campsite at Crater Park for rafters who will be conquering the Mighty Muddy Yadkin, all to improve the community's quality of life for residents and tourists alike!

The title of this column comes from the first book that I remember reading. Down the River Road was one of the Alice and Jerry series of books (sorry, no Dick and Jane for me), and while I am almost positive it was in the first grade that I read it, most listings on the internet that I’ve seen say it’s a second grade reader. And no, since I am a notoriously slow starter, I am not saying I was reading above my level. More likely, my memory is just being particularly tricky.

The Jonesville History Center Opening

The Jonesville History Center will open Saturday, November 5, 10am - 6 pm and Sunday, November 6,  2 pm - 6 pm.  The Center will continue to open on weekends during November and December. An official opening will be held this Spring when Mineral Spring Park opens. Individuals or groups may arrange to tour the Center during weekdays by calling 835-0077.
