Second Mural completed in Elkin, by muralist Michael Brown!

Mural 2 (of 4 proposed locations) was completed last week. This mural depicts businesses in Elkin that were a part of history and an important part of our past. Some of the images were added that had meaning to Chris Mahon, owner of the building, who participated in the Main Street Advisory Board mural grant program this year. For example, the "Best Little Town in NC" license plates were on everyone's car in Elkin, back in the year 1980 when Chris moved to Elkin. It held a fond memory for him...

Elkin's Main Street wins award

APA NC awarded Elkin as the "Great Main Street in the Making" for 2013.


The award was presented on March 27, in Raleigh, along with 6 other towns around North Carolina as "Great Places in North Carolina". Dozens of applications were submitted for the various honors, but only one Main Street in the Making award was available for those to applied. Elkin was chosen for its revitilization efforts, its designation as a Trail Town, and the activites that are sponsored throughout the year, bring its ...

Elkin High School Quiz Bowl Team

The Quiz Bowl was sponsored by the thirteen libraries of the Northwestern Regional Library in Alleghany, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin Counties as well as the Elkin Friends of the Library and Mount Airy Friends of the Library. This group of students participated and represented Elkin High School.  Thanks team!

Brushy Mountain Reopens redecorated and full of great space.

March 8th, Brushy Mountain Winery reopened with live music, delicious food and lots of curious customers anxious to see the newly created space.  Exposed brick walls with original art work from the early 1900's remains on newly exposed walls, along with cozy seating areas throughout, and a new color scheme with a modern flair. Elkin's "Surry County Farmers Market" welcoming additional vendors...

Surry County Farmer's Market Gearing Up Surry County is fortunate to have two farmer's markets. Both of these markets are committed to selling local produce and crafts. Customers can be assured that the food they buy is from real farmers who have produced that product. Preparations are in progress for the opening of the markets. There will be a "Vendor Informational" meeting for any farmers or crafter who is interested in participating in the markets. The meeting has been scheduled for March ...

New businesses opening up in downtown Elkin!

Funk n Junk opened February 1st and is open on Fridays and Saturdays. It is located between the Chamber of Commerce and Chill on Main, right on Court St (hill). 

Another new antique shop is open on W Main Street. They are still getting items in and are about 1/2  way filled with furniture and other nik-naks. Vendors are still setting up, but they hope to be settled in by the end of the month.
