Travel writers have the best job. This article is about Elkin's trails and why they are wonderful for everyone to use, including older tourists... I'd say Elkin is a great place to retire not only because of the friendly residents, but for the fantastic amenities we offer!

Elkin's Great Places in North Carolina award

During the Yadkin Valley WIne Festival, Elkin received their award from the American Planning Association, North Carolina Chapter, for the 2013 Great Places in North Carolina.  Elkin's award was for "Great Place in the Making" for its historical Main Street and all of the exciting things going on with the trails, festivals and holiday celebrations, and future plans for the downtown.

New public transportation provided by YVEDDI

New buses to transport residents around Elkin and to nearby towns.

Only $1 per ride on the bus...a great way for those without transportation to get out and enjoy Elkin. The route goes from the Town Hall, past the hospital, to WalMart, Food Lion, Goody's, downtown Elkin and will drive up to 3/4 mile off of the route to any location. 

The Connector bus can take you to Mount Airy, Boonville, Dobson or Jonesville

TRACK Trails for Kids at Elkin Municipal Park

The TRACK Trail Ribbon-Cutting was last weekend at the Elkin Municipal Park. Everyone gathered behind the tennis courts at the gazebo to celebrate the beginning of this new program in Elkin for children. Each TRACK Trail has a series of brochure-led self-guided adventures designed to turn an ordinary hike into a fun-filled adventure. Two years ago, my friend, Crystal Morphis, and I were on a long training run and talking about how much our lives had changed for the better once we started running.  Both of us agree that running has taught us things about ourselves we might not have known, and it made us better people in all sorts of ways. That's when the idea for G-Force, a running program for girls in grades 3-6 at Elkin Elementary School, was born.

Elkin Jaycees 19th Annual 4th of July Celebration vendors wanted!

The Elkin Jaycees are planning now for their Annual 4th of July Celebration at Elkin Municipal Park. Currently they are looking for craft, non-profit, clothing and food vendors. The celebration will be held on July 4th, 2012, from roughly 4-10pm. Vendor fee is $125, however, non-profits representing themselves or interested in raising awareness for their cause, are free. Interested in being a Revolutionary War re-enactor for the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail?

Elkin is the eastern trailhead that was included as a part of the victorious campaign to the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. The Wilkes-Surry Chapter of the Overmountain Victory Trail Assoc is keeping the story alive through education, preservation and interpretation. Devin Reavis is passionate about cycling

Devin Reavis is an Elkin resident that is making quite a name for himself in the racing world. He is an 8th grader at Elkin Middle School, and has given up all other sports to focus on becoming a professional cyclist and race with the best, just like his mentor and coach, former Elkin High School graduate, Chris Monteleone.
