Smith Phillips property to be developed into Trails & Heritage Visitor Center

Between Christmas and New Year’s holidays, work began on an Elkin downtown property where the former Smith Phillips lumber yard had been located.

Elkin town commissioners voted to approve monies to be spent towards the redevelopment of the property at 257 Standard St. during the 2015-16 fiscal year budgeting process. The TRACK Trail Ribbon-Cutting was last weekend at the Elkin Municipal Park. Everyone gathered behind the tennis courts at the gazebo to celebrate the beginning of this new program in Elkin for children. Each TRACK Trail has a series of brochure-led self-guided adventures designed to turn an ordinary hike into a fun-filled adventure. Elkin is an important trail head for three trails which total over fourteen hundred miles.  The Mountains to the Sea Trail and the Over Mountain Victory Trail are hiking trails.  The Yadkin River Trail is a "bluewater" trail.
