Trail Marker #14 - Woolen Mill Photo

As the original woolen factory, known as Elkin Valley Woolen Mill continued to grow, Thomas L Gwyn sold his interest in the company to Alexander Chatham in 1890.  In this reorganization, the company was named Chatham Manufacturing Company.  A new plant was built in 1893 in order to take advantage of the innovative railroad as Elkin moved into the steam-powered generation.   The mill produced woolen blankets, flannels, jeans, and knitting yarns. The company's famous products included woolen "Chatham Blankets," which were sold in all parts of the United States.
